Volunteer of the week: Angela
Angela Dijkhuis has been involved in the European Junior Cycling Tour Assen from an early age. After her short cycling career in the aspiranten-category she started as a mini-miss. She stood behind the cash register in the Wielerhome and as the now 15-year-old Angela grew older, her duties expanded.
“I help my father Bram a lot with the computer work that he has to do as a secretary. I really enjoy organizing. The subject I study at VMBO also has something to do with that and I want to develop it further.”
Organizing is in the Dijkhuis family’s blood. Brother Tim is part of the crew responsible for building up the courses but he also organized large parties in a disco already. Father Bram is one of the driving forces within the SOW Foundation.
“In our family, we think it is important to do volunteer work. I am a handball player myself, but I am also a referee and I will be a trainer next season. That is how you give something back.”
For some time now, Angela has been the main point of contact for the aspirants, our smallest participants. “The fun of the children is always paramount but there is a real fight for that red jersey and for the medals. I think it is great fun. It is also nice for me to reassure the youngest children if they are so nervous about their races. This way everyone has a great week! ”
Angela wants to remain involved in the Assen Jeugdtour for a long time to come. “If I continue studying after my exam next year, I would also like to go into the organizational field. Within the organization of the Jeugdtour I can also take on more and more tasks in the future. Yes, it is a week that I look forward to every year, “she concludes.
